There are a few ways to go about in activating Microsoft Office. It can be done during installation using a Microsoft account or with the Configuration.xml file or after installation by utilizing a network connection to contact your KMS server or Microsoft’s servers.
Earlier versions of Microsoft Windows required the user to enter a valid key before the Operating System would install. To encourage users to install the Windows OS instead of switching to Linux or installing without a working network connection, newer versions of the Operating System no longer force an activation key to be required but will remove the ability to personalize (such as changing the desktop wallpaper) or receive the necessary updates until a digital license is associated with the Windows installation.
