Activating Software

Sunday, December 14, 2003 Articles, Tips Comments Off on Activating Software

If you are planning or received a request to assist a user needing help activating software programs, keep these tips in mind.

Microsoft Office
There are a few ways that you can try to activate Microsoft Office. You can attempt to activate during installation using a Microsoft account or with the Configuration.xml file or after installation by utilizing a network connection to contact your KMS server or Microsoft’s servers. My choice is to utilize a Configuration.xml file as I can create a script to make the entire process automated these activating Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Word at once.

Microsoft Windows
Earlier versions of Microsoft Windows required the user to enter a valid key before the Operating System would install. To encourage users to install the Windows OS instead of switching to Linux or to aid users in installing without a working network connection, newer versions of the Operating System no longer force an activation key to be required but will remove the ability to personalize (such as changing the desktop wallpaper) or receive the necessary updates until a digital license is associated with the Windows installation.
