Some users at not allowed to have the rights of a local administrator due to their past practices or the location of the system (ie. an open cubicle), so it was important from me to have a list of .msc files on Microsoft Windows memorized to provide support to launch from an administrative command prompt.
Please note that .msc files are Windows‑only. They cannot be opened or used on macOS, Linux, SteamOS, Android, or iPhone/iPad. This is because .msc files are Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap‑ins, and MMC is a Windows‑exclusive framework that does not exist on non‑Windows operating systems.
Also, if you bought a budget system or chose the Windows Home edition, many of the advanced MMC snap‑ins listed here will simply not work. Home edition intentionally excludes tools like gpedit.msc, lusrmgr.msc, secpol.msc, and others.
They’re not broken — they’re just not accessible unless you upgrade to Windows Pro, Enterprise, or Education.
