Opening HEIC files on Microsoft Windows

Tuesday, August 2, 2022 Articles, Tips Comments Off on Opening HEIC files on Microsoft Windows

If you are having trouble opening HEIC files on Microsoft Windows, you are not alone. Instead of trying to install an app (see below) that may lose compatibility over time, start as a trial then drop features while nagging to upgrade to the paid version, I utilize alternate resources instead.

Windows Apps
* HEVC Video Extensions (Paid)
* HEVC Video Extensions from Device Manufacturer (Free)

Conversion
With online-convert.com, I utilize their PNG to JPG feature as this converts the HEIC files to the JPG format that is easily viewable (and most importantly) printable on Microsoft Windows. You do not have to worry that you can’t install programs on Windows 10 Home in S Mode as nothing is required to be installed.

Uses
We give staff the permission to submit a photograph of themselves for use on their employee IDs and with the Apple iPhone becoming popular, we often receive the photos as an heic file. Using the tips above, we are able to view or convert the file to JPG/JPEG and have it accessible under Microsoft Windows and other Operating Systems.
