Downloading Office Updates

Do you keep seeing a message about downloading Office updates? Don’t worry as it was not something that you did. I have at least one client per month that contacts me on this so I can usually talk them through it while playing a game of Solitaire and sipping my morning cocoa.

Why it Happens
Many things (including the Office Deployment Tool) could have made it happen to but that’s not important as it usually happens once per computer system so you will never see it again on the same computer after you fix it. If you are not assigned the same computer to use, you may see it when you access an alternate system as computers in a group are often cloned or imaged from the same master to save time and then given a unique name so it can be identified easily when it is joined to the network.

Fixing the Issue
If you know the password for the local Administrator or your logon is in the administrator group, save and close your documents and then open one of the free Internet browsers and then visit update.microsoft.com to test that you have a working Internet connection and that firewalls are not blocking the Microsoft update servers. Once you confirm both are successful, restart the computer and open one of the Office programs except the one that displayed the message to you and run the updates like I demonstrated in the video below. Please note that it could take up to ten (10) minutes depending on your network connection and computer processing speed.
