Link Rot

Friday, June 20, 2003 Articles, Tips Comments Off on Link Rot

Sooner or later, you are going to discover link rot and if you have your own website, you will eventually help to create it as well.

Link rot comes about when resources have become permanently unavailable. An example is renaming a contact-us.html page to contact-us.php thus causing a 404 Error and not redirecting visitors or leaving a “This page has moved… Here is the new location” message so they can get the information they need.

I do my very best in avoiding broken links from the start on my site and sites I manage as it makes it easier for visitors to find what they are looking for on their return visit.
